It took one New Moon casting announcement to bring Alex Meraz from obscurity into the thick of Twilight mania. Out of all the wolf pack cast introduced, Meraz has clearly captured the public imagination with his shirtless photos and his piercing eyes. But who is Alex Meraz? We asked his mentor and friend, actor Raoul Trujillo, to give us a breakdown.
HE’S, UM, PRETTY HOT (OKAY, THAT WAS OUR POINT): “The camera loves him,” agrees Trujillo. “Everywhere we go people are always saying, ‘Good God, who is your friend.’”
“This is only going to be scarier now.”
HE’S GONE FROM ‘NEW WORLD’ TO ‘NEW MOON’: Meraz’s first big film was New World as one of the Powhatan core warriors. “That’s kind of where he got the bug,” says fellow New World cast member Trujillo. “It was an incredible experience.”
Meraz was in the running, but was turned down for Apocalypto: “Mel felt he didn’t look Mayan enough, which was silly.” says Trujillo who was cast. “I don’t look Mayan either, but they put a prosthetic nose on me and I looked plenty Mayan.”
HE’S A SERIOUS DANCER: Meraz came to Trujillo’s attention when another choreographer found him break-dancing on the streets in Phoenix, Arizona. Besides break-dancing he excels in indigenous and contemporary dancing. Meraz is “an inherent dancer” says Trujillo. who is also a choreographer.
Even Colin Farrell was impressed when Meraz busted some moves at the New World wrap party. Trujillo: “Colin was just sitting and watching cross-legged all ga-ga going, ‘Oh my god.’ “
HE CAN KICK SERIOUS VAMPIRE BUTT: Alex has studied mixed martial arts, winning numerous tournaments in karate and the martial art of Capoeira. “He’s a pretty lethal martial artist,” says Trujillo. “He can kick some serious ass.”
So who’d win: Alex or a vampire? “If it were going to be one of the Twilight vampires, I’d bet on Alex in a minute,” laughs Trujillo. “But in the end, you bet on the screenwriter. They say what’s going to happen.”
THE DUDE WORKS HARD: Nabbing the key role in Twilight was no fluke for the young actor. “If there’s anyone I have known in my life that deserves this, it’s Alex,” says Trujillo. “He’s worked his ass off in the time I have known him. He never lets up.”
Beyond staying in top physical shape, the actor-student works hard on honing his craft, including his New Moon audition. “Alex drove from Phoenix to my ranch in New Mexico on his birthday weekend so I could help him with his audition,” says Trujillo. “It’s about 8 hours each way. But he knew he needed to get this done.”
“He’s humble,” says Trujillo. “And he always showed that he was willing to listen and learn.”
Even with those essentials, it took a lot of work, luck and talent to break through.
“New Moon happened to be there at the right time,” says Trujillo. “This is his first big break. And what a break to have. This whole thing is a phenomena.”
SORRY LADIES, HE’S MARRIED: Alex is madly in love with his Vietnamese-American wife Kim, who posed nude while pregnant with their son. They have a child named Somak (Trujillo is the god-parent). Kim was the one who was a true Twilight fan.
“His wife is the one who has read all of those books. And she’s the one who said look, you have to got to get into this. This is perfect for you. You’re the one.”
FINALLY, HE’S RIPPED: “I sometimes have to tell him, ‘I hate you, put your shirt on,’ ” says Trujillo.
“He’s slender anyways and he has a body that just is that way. He doesn’t even really work out because if he works out he gets huge. He’s got these shoulders on him. It’s from the martial arts and the break dancing. And he’s one of those genetically gifted guy.”
“They are going to have to get a trainer for everyone else on set or he is going to stand out like a sore thumb.”
Celebuzz reports that in a bizarre twist of movie-release scheduling, Twilight co-stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart will be in direct competition soon, because their upcoming movies are being released on the same day.
The Los Angeles Times reports that Pattinson’s Little Ashes—in which the Twilight hunk plays surrealist painter Salvador Dali—and Stewart’s comedy Adventureland—about an amusement-park employee who learns important life lessons from his work environment—will both be released on March 27.
And even though they’re both making the big bucks these days, Pattinson, 22, and Stewart, 18, can’t be happy about the fact that they’ll be vying for the Twilight audience’s movie-going dollar.
Hopefully this won’t cause the castmates to be at each others’ throats while filming the upcoming Twilight sequel New Moon—which, coincidentally, begins filming in March.

“Vampire romance “Twilight” hurtled Kristen Stewart to the kind of fame that can turn a life into a roller coaster ride, so it seems appropriate that her new movie revolves around an amusement park.
“Adventureland,” which premiered this week at the Sundance Film Festival, is one of a string of quirky movies Stewart, 18, has starred-in since her first film at age 11.
But none of those movies ever brought the actress the sort of attention she has received the last two months since “Twilight” struck gold at box offices with more than $324 million worldwide since its November debut.”
“Adventureland” is a coming-of-age movie about a recent college graduate named James, played by “The Squid and the Whale” star Jesse Eisenberg, who takes a summer job at an amusement park.
There, he falls in love with a tortured but sincere young carnival worker named Em Lewin (Stewart) and finds that true love is an adventure in and of itself.”
“Miramax Films will release the movie in March, following its premiere at Sundance — the No. 1 U.S. gathering for independent film. At the festival, a quirky and offbeat love story like “Adventureland” can gain the kind of media attention it needs to lure audiences to box offices.”

EW reports – Summit Entertainment’s newest film, Push — starring Dakota Fanning (pictured) — may have been the main event at its premiere last night in Los Angeles. But the studio still trotted out several Twilight actors to walk the red carpet, and the upcoming sequel New Moon was definitely on everyone’s mind — including whether Fanning would slip on evil Jane’s fangs. “Dakota Fanning would be great as Jane,” said Ashley Green (goodie vamp Alice Cullen). “I really hope that rumor becomes reality.” Fanning, however, said she wasn’t quite ready to bite. “I think it is too soon to say for sure whether I will or won’t be in [New Moon],” she told EW.com. “But it would be really cool to do it. I am a very big fan of the books. I read them all and Jane is an interesting part. We haven’t really sat down and talked about it. So we will see. It was a good experience working with Summit. I guess I now have an in at the company.”

Robert Pattinson has one gripe about living in Los Angeles – he misses the smell of London.
The actor – who shot to fame playing vampire Edward Cullen in the recent Twilight film – rents an apartment in L.A. as it’s convenient for his work.
But Pattinson admits pining for his home in the British capital when he’s away.
He says, “I miss being able to go for a walk.
“I miss the smell of London…I almost cried because I missed it so much. And I miss my dog [Patty, a female West Highland white terrier].
“I haven’t moved [to L.A.] for good. I live in a rented apartment where all of the furniture is rented.”
Robert, 22, can next be seen starring alongside Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner in Twilight sequel New Moon, which has a tentative release date of November 20, 2009.

Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson may be unattached at the moment, but he definitely believes in love at first sight.
“It’s absolutely possible that you can meet someone on the street and suddenly fall in love with that person,” says Rob, 22. “That often happens to me,” he laughs.
The 6’1″ British hunk, who recently said he thinks girls prefer bad boys over nice guys, insists he is always a gentleman. “Even when I don’t follow every rule, I think I’m a gentleman,” he says. “I don’t tell [a girl] how she has to be for me. I don’t want her to change herself for me.”

“Director Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass) picks up where Twilight’s Catherine Hardwicke left off on the production that starts shooting March 23. One of his first tasks on the sequel was deciding to keep Lautner, whose gangly Native American high-schooler in the first film transforms into a hulking giant over the course of the book series as he fulfills his tribe’s destiny.
“Taylor is a formidable guy, kind of a great tool in the toolbox,” Weitz says of the nearly 17-year-old actor who has been working out daily and has packed on 29 pounds, most of it muscle. “In the first movie, we did not see or recognize how dangerous a character he could be.”
As for Taylor himself, “he can kill me with his left pinky. But he is too nice to do that. There is something compelling and sexy about him. He captures the spirit of Jacob.”
